Curriculum

The sports medicine program is a six-quarter graduate professional master’s degree program designed to provide students with advanced training in the prevention, evaluation and management of injuries and disorders affecting athletes and others participating in sports activities. As a professional master’s degree, it is targeted at students with prior training in the evaluation and management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders. This audience includes physicians, physicians’ assistants, chiropractic physicians, athletic trainers, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other health care providers with a background knowledge in musculoskeletal care.

There are three concentration choices available:

  • Physical Assessment and Rehabilitation (UWS DC students only)
  • High Performance Leadership
  • Performance Nutrition

The UWS catalog houses the curriculum, course descriptions, curriculum sequence and other helpful information about the program. View the current catalog.

Background Checks

The master’s in sports medicine program prides itself on the ability to deliver hands-on field experiences to its students through a wide variety of sports and organizations. We maintain this opportunity while also holding our students and clinicians to the highest levels and standards of safety of our patients and greater community.

To achieve this goal, our practicum participation at Oregon high school athletic programs currently requires annual registration, criminal background checks and acceptance of Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) directives, as well as Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) by our staff and students, as required under Oregon state law. This process will be handled by your practicum course instructors during the appropriate stage in your program.

Fees for the registration and background checks vary by year. UWS practicum course students are required to cover the cost of fees. Applicable fees are to be paid by the student through school district processes, and completion of all forms and criminal background check procedures, including digital fingerprinting, are a prerequisite to entering the practicum course sequence. As these fees are required for the practicum course sequence, they are financial aid eligible.
