Nathan Long, Ed.D.

Interim President

Nathan Long, Ed.D., was appointed by the Board of Trustees to serve as Interim President of University of Western States (UWS), beginning his term on June 24, 2024. He is currently on sabbatical from his presidency at Saybrook University. During his time at UWS, he intends to support a number of strategic initiatives promoting the growth and long-term sustainability of the institution.

Dr. Long has been serving as president of Saybrook University since August 2014. Saybrook is a non-profit, regionally accredited, private institution of higher learning and a member of The Community Solution Education System. He is also the host of the podcast “Saybrook Insights with President Nathan Long,” which brings key ideas to audiences across the country from Saybrook faculty, students, alumni, and the broader community, helping advance the health and well-being of all our communities.

Prior to his roles at UWS and Saybrook University, Dr. Long served for ten years as an associate professor, dean, chief academic officer, and then president of The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has also held academic and student affairs positions at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, the University of Cincinnati, and Arizona State University.

Dr. Long’s academic credentials include a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance, a Master of Education in Educational Studies with cognates in educational psychology and sociology, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Studies, with core concentrations in history, sociology, and peace and urban education. Among his publications, he has several peer-reviewed academic articles and has co-edited and co-authored works including African American Peace Leaders of the 20th Century with Drs. Marvin Berlowitz and Eric Jackson (2003, Mellen Press).

He currently resides in both Portland, Oregon, and the Southern California area with his partner, Kim.
