With a 16+ year career as a counselor educator and rich background that includes clinical practice, teaching, and academic administration, Dr. Cannon brings a wealth of experience to UWS. Currently serving as Associate Professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, she brings her passion for the counseling profession and optimal support to her students, ensuring the highest standards of counselor education and client care are met. Her clinical work spans various populations, with a special emphasis on women's issues, adolescent mental health, and the innovative use of neurofeedback for mood disorder treatment.
Beyond her professional roles, Dr. Cannon is an active contributor to the counseling community, regularly presenting research at both state and national levels and publishing scholarly writings in esteemed journals and textbooks, including her most recent "Lifespan Development: Cultural and Contextual Applications for the Helping Professions" (2022). Dr. Cannon's research interests reflect her multifaceted perspective, encompassing counselor development, Relational-Cultural Theory, and assessment practices in higher education. As an editorial board member for the Journal for Creativity in Mental Health, she remains deeply engaged in shaping the discourse within her field.
However, Dr. Cannon's journey extends beyond her professional accomplishments. Inspired by the infinite curiosity, wisdom, and beautiful insight of her three young daughters, she remains committed to continuous growth and learning, recognizing the importance of challenging herself to be a better ally, counselor, educator, and human being every day. With a genuine passion for understanding and empathy, she approaches her work with a blend of academic rigor and heartfelt compassion, striving to do her part to create a more inclusive and equitable world.
Outside of work Dr. Cannon lives in Austin, Texas with her amazing husband, three daughters, and adorable dog, Remi.
